Why Denmark Is the Best Place in the World to Do a PhD

I wouldn’t want to do a PhD anywhere else, even in my home country

“There is a funded PhD at the Technical University of Denmark you might be interested in”, read an email I received three and a half years ago. I immediately felt a sick/giddy feeling at the thought of applying. I’d never known anyone personally with a PhD, and I thought that there was such little chance that I would be successful, I almost didn’t apply.

But as I eventually decided to take the chance. I knew almost nothing about Denmark. And equally almost nothing about PhDs.

As I draw closer to my impending PhD thesis deadline, I feel so fortunate that I decided to do a PhD in Denmark. Here’s why I wouldn’t want to do it anywhere else.

  1. You are treated like faculty, not a student

Throughout my master's degree in the UK, I met a lot of PhD students doing their PhD around the world. There were some common complaints, namely that they were seen very much as a student. Somewhere lost in the limbo between working and studying, they didn’t often get a lot of funding to attend conferences, hire research assistants to help with their project, or receive the respect of their senior colleagues.
